Today is Holy Saturday, Sabado de Gloria, which literally means ‘Saturday of Glory’ in Spain. It’s also called Black Saturday, Hallelujah Saturday, Easter Vigil, Easter Eve, Joyous Saturday and the Great Sabbath. As a Theologian, I personally prefer calling the Saturday before Easter Sunday, The Great Sabbath, because it agrees with the concept of the Sabbath, which is to rest. On The Great Sabbath, Jesus “rested” in His tomb.
It’s the remembrance of the day when Jesus after dying on the cross, descended into Hades or ‘the lower parts of the earth’ (Ephesians 4:9, NKJV) to bring salvation to the imprisoned souls there like Adam and Eve, or those who didn’t believe in the days of Noah, as this might the only chance they get to e saved for no one can preach the Good News to them but God Himself (1 Peter 3:18-20). So, while Jesus was dead in the flesh (Revelation 1:18), yet alive in the Spirit, He gave them a chance to believe in Him. This demonstrated God’s Love for each one of us; ‘He doesn’t want anyone to perish’ (2 Peter 3:9).
As we wait in silence and remember the Resurrection of Our LORD, may we spend today reflecting on the completion of God’s salvific plan and His selfless love.

Pray with me:
Dear LORD Jesus, You knew what you were signing up for when You came to this world in the form of a helpless baby on that First Christmas Day. You knew that redeeming us from our sinful deeds would require Your death, yet You still willingly came to us because You wanted and want to spend eternity with us, Your creation, Your Masterpiece. While it is true that You don’t need us, You want to be with us. With incredible love and steadfastness, You gave up Your life willingly just for the slight chance of being with us for eternity for it was not guaranteed that we would choose to love You back, yet You sacrificed Yourself so that whoever may believe in You may have eternal life. You’ve made salvation possible for all of us, although it was never guaranteed we would accept it. Thank You for never giving up on us and making a way to secure the forgiveness of our sins once and for all. May we never take for granted the depth of your Love for us, but honour it each day of our earthly lives. Thank You also for Your Resurrection, ‘for if you haven’t been raised from the dead, our Faith would be in vain’ (1 Corinthians 15:14). With Your Resurrection, we were raised up with You (Ephesians 2:6) giving us the hope of eternal life. In the Mighty Name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
If you’re still not saved, know that salvation is available to you right now. You only need to ‘confess with your mouth the LORD Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved’ (Romans 10:9).
And remember to celebrate Easter for the real reason, for it’s not about the bunny; it’s about the Lamb of God. Thank you for reading and may God bless you today and always.
